Workshops – Professional Advisers
Philanthropy & Structured Giving 101
There is a quiet but significant shift underway in Australia’s advice landscape. Clients are increasingly asking not just how to grow and protect their wealth, but how to use it with purpose. For many professional advisers, this presents both an opportunity and a challenge. How to confidently introduce and guide meaningful conversations around giving, without it feeling complex, premature or outside their expertise.
For
Accountants, lawyers, financial advisers new to philanthropy or structured giving.
Purpose
Introduce Australia’s philanthropic landscape and inspire advisers to see their role in enabling giving.
Outcomes
Understand the giving ecosystem, recognise client motivations and barriers, and be clear on structured giving vehicles.
Introduction
Introduction to Philanthropy and Structured Giving 101 is designed as a practical and accessible starting point for accountants, financial advisers and lawyers who are new to this space. This workshop cuts through the noise to provide a clear, grounded understanding of Australia’s philanthropic landscape and the growing role advisers can play within it.
Participants will explore how structured giving fits alongside traditional financial and legal advice and why it is becoming an increasingly relevant part of holistic client conversations. You will gain a working understanding of key giving vehicle structures, as well as the motivations and triggers that often shape a client’s approach to giving and philanthropy.
Importantly, this is not about turning advisers into technical specialists overnight. It is about building confidence. Helping you recognise opportunities, ask the right questions and begin conversations in a way that feels natural, valuable and aligned to your existing client relationships. By the end of the program, you will be better equipped to identify when structured giving may be relevant and to take the first steps in supporting your clients to move from intention to meaningful impact.
Objectives
You will develop a clear, practical understanding of Australia’s philanthropic landscape. How it is structured, the key players involved and where structured giving fits within the broader ecosystem. This foundation is essential in helping you feel oriented and credible when the topic arises with clients
You will also be introduced to the core structured giving vehicles available in Australia, including options such as Private Ancillary Funds, Public Ancillary Funds and Sub Funds. Rather than focusing on technical detail, the emphasis is on helping you understand what these structures are, when they may be relevant and how they can be positioned within your existing advice framework.
A key focus is to also build your ability to recognise client motivations and barriers. You will explore the common triggers that lead clients to consider giving, alongside the reasons many hesitate or delay. This insight will help you approach conversations with greater empathy and relevance.
Finally, you will be encouraged to reflect on your role as a trusted adviser. Structured giving does not require you to have all the answers. It begins with your ability to identify opportunities, ask thoughtful questions and open the door to more meaningful discussions. The goal is to help you move from awareness to action, in a way that feels both authentic and valuable to your clients.
